The Imposter Syndrome Myth

At the least, many business environments and places where decisions are made ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ญ๐˜บ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด๐˜ช๐˜จ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ with participation in mind from women and people of color, ๐™ก๐™š๐™ฉ'๐™จ ๐™ฃ๐™ค๐™ฉ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง๐™œ๐™š๐™ฉ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™›๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ข๐™ค๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™๐™ž๐™จ๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง๐™ฎ "๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™š" ๐™๐™–๐™ซ๐™š ๐™—๐™š๐™š๐™ฃ ๐™š๐™ญ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™ž๐™˜๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™š๐™ญ๐™˜๐™ก๐™ช๐™™๐™š๐™™ ๐™›๐™ง๐™ค๐™ข ๐™ฉ๐™๐™š๐™จ๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™ก๐™–๐™˜๐™š๐™จ ๐˜ฝ๐™” ๐™‡๐˜ผ๐™’ ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™ฉ๐™๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ ๐™ค๐™› ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™/๐™ค๐™ง ๐™–๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™–๐™ก ๐™ซ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ก๐™š๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š.


So, while I understand that programs to help women and other historically marginalized people overcome โ€œimposter syndromeโ€ are well-meaning, and I know ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐˜€ ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ ๐—ถ๐—ป ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ฟ [๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—น๐—น๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ] ๐—บ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฑ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ณ๐—ฎ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜ "๐—•๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด", I also think these messages (ironically?) gaslight their intended audiences: โ€œ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฏโ€™๐˜ต ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ด ๐˜ธ๐˜ข๐˜บ. ๐˜ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ ๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฌ๐˜ฆ ๐˜บ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ ๐˜ฃ๐˜ฆ๐˜ญ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜จ!โ€ when, in fact, if ๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐—ฝ๐˜€ ๐—ถ๐—ณ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚'๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ธ๐—ฒ ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ปโ€™๐˜ ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด๐—ฒ๐—ฑ โ€“ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜โ€™๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฎ๐—น๐—น๐˜† ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚!
